Episode 32 - Tyra Randle - "Shining Diamonds"

Published on: January 4, 2024

We’re so excited to bring to you an episode where we talked with Tyra Randle.

We talked with Tyra Randle (she/her), about disability, workplace change, mindset change, paying people for their work, and more. Tyra is a 2-year paraplegic and domestic violence survivor. On January 15 of 2020 she was shot 8 times in her home by her son’s father. Since then, she has devoted her life to being an advocate and philanthropist for domestic violence survivors and victims as well as the disabled community. She is currently in the process of creating her own foundation for domestic violence victims and people with disabilities. “Diamond in the Rough” aims to deliver education, inspiration and hope to a variety of audiences that have experienced domestic violence, want to keep from experiencing domestic violence, those who are disabled or know someone that is.

Just a heads-up before you listen: this episode is about disability, and for our guest, Tyra, this is linked to her experience of domestic violence, which we talk pretty extensively about. If you think that you’re not ready for this right now, we encourage you to put this episode back on the shelf to come back to later, or to skip entirely.

We also want to remind everyone that if you’re experiencing or have experienced domestic violence, we all know that it’s not your fault, and there are resources out there to help. There’s the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233, and in California the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence has a full page of organizations all over California that can help. https://www.cpedv.org/

We also talk about incarceration in this episode, and if you’re interested in further conversations about incarceration, you can check out episode 27 with Lily Hamilton and episode 10 with Clarence Ford and Skylar Economy.
